Karen Henry, Teacher of the Year 2008 Karen Henry

At the Annual General Meeting on June 3, 2008, it was announced that Karen Henry is the Teacher of the Year 2008. Karen was nominated by Sandra Conrad who introduced Karen to those present at the meeting. Johanna Alford, CQA/ACC Vice President presented Karen with the silver-plated engraved seam ripper. Karen then made her acceptance speech which will be fondly remembered as it was followed by her “yoo-hoo”.

Sandra Conrad’s submission of Karen’s nomination brought out a number of well known facts.
  • She has been a long time member of CQA and has promoted the organization as the Regional Representative for Nova Scotia.
  • Karen established a website: “Quilt the Atlantic” promoting teachers and their expertise.
  • She inspires her students to develop their imagination and turn their apprehension into fascination.
  • As the founding president of her home guild; Mariners Quilt Guild, she also organized Bell House a studio for seven quilt artists well known in the region.
  • Karen is always well organized, prepared and pays attention to detail which she passes on to her students.
  • Her love of quilting, enthusiasm, patience, generosity and professionalism has encouraged others to continue the art of quilting.
  • Karen has attended or taught at five QC’s and those who meet her in the future should remember to say “yoo-hoo”.
