Nancy McIntyre
Woodheath Lane

Westshore Quilters' Guild held their second quilt show, Symphony of Quilts, March 28, 2009. The first recipient from the Westshore Quilters' Guild on Vancouver Island, B.C. to receive a CQA/ACC Rosette was Nancy McIntyre. "My mother had just moved into her new home on Woodheath Lane hence the quilt's name, so I used her favourite shades of green. To add texture and interest to the blocks I did some pin tucking in the center of the stars. I measured, folded, tucked, un-tucked, re-tucked, stitched and fiddled until I came up with a pleasing texture. To help balance the blocks I quilted them in gold metallic thread with heavier quilting in the block centers that were not pin tucked. I chose a black backing and more gold metallic thread in the bobbin so the quilt is virtually reversible." The quilt was long arm quilted by Nancy McIntyre and designed by Gail Tucker.

Margaret Skelley
Wild Thyme

Story of Margaret Skelley's Quilt: Who wouldn't fall in love with this quilt? We were designing our home on the Sunshine Coast at the time and these colours and the simple designs fit perfectly with what I was hoping to achieve here. These individual squares made an ideal travelling companion. As I worked, the designs became more personal. Some were made more life-like. During the year, one of my sisters became very ill and one square was done sitting at her bedside. As we worked through her death, my mother drew the Pansies for me. The last square I completed was the Poppies, designed to remember the Poppy Boulevard in California where my grandson lives. Hand embroidery embellished the quilt. I felted the wool myself for the border and binding. Betty-Ann Welsh

Betty-Ann found her inspiration at The Quilt: A Breast Cancer Support Project, 2002, in Stratford, ON, where she saw the group quilt (also a Viewers' Choice winner) submitted by the Huron Perth Quilters. Upon inquiry, Betty-Ann received the pattern, kindly sent by one of the quilt's designers, of the quilt "Maple Leaf" (from June 1982 Canada Quilts magazine). In thanks for the pattern, Betty-Ann sent back a small album with a cover she had hand quilted. In return, she then received a lovely finished square, which she has incorporated into her own quilt.
