My Dear Edith Version of Dear Jane

Sudbury & District Quilting and Stitchery Guild held its Quilts on the Rocks 2009 show in the fall. The Best of Show and Viewer’s Choice CQA/ACC rosette was awarded to Patti MacKinnon’s ‘My Dear Edith Version of Dear Jane’. Size 98”x98”. Patti was inspired to challenge herself to do these hand pieced and appliquéd intricate little blocks and finish it with hand quilting!

"The Kindred Spirit's Quilt Guild in PEI held their 2008 show and the Viewer's Choice award was presented to Lorna Wheatley by former KSQG President Ada Chinery. The quilt is ""The Rose of Oz"" (86x106""), a design by Wintle Quilts of Richmond Que. Lorna also received the Betty Foster Award . The recipient of this award is a Guild member chosen by their peers who represents outstanding quilting. Betty Foster was instrumental in establishing the KSQG.

At Piece with Time

South Shore Quilter’s Guild held their 2009 quilt show in the fall. Brenda Wadey won Viewers’ Choice with her hand appliquéd and hand pieced quilt ‘At Piece with Time’. Irene, who has quilted for twenty years, loves to make quilts for her children and other family members. The pattern was designed by Kristen C. Steiner and in the book ‘At Piece with Time – A Woman’s Journey Stitched in Cloth.

East Meets West

Brenda Wadey was our Viewers Choice winner at the Laurentian QG show, "East Meets West", September 2009 in Saint Sauveur, QC. Her quilt "BIRDS" is hand-appliquéd and hand-quilted. The design is from a book by Bea Oglesby. Brenda was looking for something to keep her busy on the long flight to England. It ended up being a three year project. Quilt size is 73" x 85".

Lucie Richard of Sherbrooke won the CQA/ACC rosette for Excellence of the work, excellence du travail, for her ‘Harmonie en bleu et brun’. Lucie is a retired educator who has done embroidery for many years. She is a new quilter. This winning quilt is her second large quilt.

The Mountain Cabin Quiilt Guild held its Fall Show and Tea in October 2009. Margaret Froese won viewer’s choice for her quilt ‘Mariner’s Compass’. Margaret was drawn by the mariner’s compass pattern. Both the pattern and fabric were designed by Jenny Beyer and sold as a kit. Margaret pieced the blocks by hand to get the points sharp. Machine quilted by Diana Pretz . Size 80”x80”.

Upper Canada Quilters’ Guild held their Flying Geese Quilt Show and sale in October 2009.
Sharon Shaver won the CQA/ACC rosette for ‘Welsh Beauty’ in the Hand Quilted Bed Quilts Category. Sharon has made two whole cloth quilts – both for her daughters. ‘Welsh Beauty’ celebrates her second daughter’s 25th wedding anniversary. Size 90’x108”. This impressive quilt is whole cloth and hand quilted. Pattern: pr-printed by Hollice Turnbow, New York.

The Saskatoon Quilters’ Guild held their show in October 2009. Kristen Hepfner won the CQA/ACC rosette for ‘Grace and Elegance’. She also received $150 plus a sewing machine donated by Haus of Stitches in Humboldt, SK. Size 80”x102”. Kristen was inspired after seeing a postage stamp quilt and was intrigued by this technique. The design is original and was hand quilted by Kristen. The cross stitching was a pattern.

Waterloo Country Quilters’ Guild celebrated their 25th anniversary with a show in Sept. 2009.
Ellen Rettinger won the CQA/ACC rosette with her ‘Ellen’s Botanical Garden. Size 66”x80”. The pattern is Botanical Garden Series by Ellen Heck and was made in a workshop led by Ellen. The border is original. Hand appliquéd with ultra suede embellishment and hand quilting. The many hours of challenging work produced a well loved piece of art.

Niagara Heritage Quilters’ Guild held their Autumn Splendour Quilt Show in October 2009.
Paula Perri won Viewer’s Choice with ‘Purple Stardust. Size 42”x77”. Quilted by Paula.

This quilt is a wall hanging for Paula’s entertainment room, which is decorated in purple, grey and black. The design is original, based on photographs of Ribbon Bargello quilts. She used photography to design the placement of the strips. Paula quilted on her long arm using metallic thread with Sally Terry’s ‘Hooked on Feathers’ technique. The interior of the quilt is beaded to create an impression of stardust.

Leduc Black Gold Quilt Patch Guild held their Expressions from the Heart Quilted Comforts 2009. ‘Pansy Passions’ by Patsy Fidelak won Viewer’s Choice. “I love pansies! When I saw the fabric, I knew I had to make it into this quilt”. This traditional colour wash Irish Chain was made in a class taught by Lydia Froehler. The quilt was quilted by Geri Smit on a long arm machine.

Akerley Area Quilt Guild held its 'Then and Now' Quilt Show in October 2009. The winner of Viewer's Choice was Brenda Dunsmore with her 'Country Quilts'. Pattern by Joan Staz of Joan's Own Creation, with a few embellishments added by Brenda. She loved the image of quilts blowing on the line.

Donna Denham of Ottawa ON won Viewer's Choice at Lanark County Quilting Guild show 'Quilts on the Tay' in august 2009. 'Making Do with Style' is self designed and made with Donna's hand drawn paper pieced patterns. The quilt is 98"x93" and was quilted by Grace Whiting. The pattern is based on 'New York Beauty'.
