Log Cabin Sampler

This is the quilt the "almost didn't get made". The blocks were foundation pieced in 1997, then put away because I didn't want to quilt a large quilt on my home machine. I found them in 20012 when I was doing some clean up and had put them in the "discard" pile. Then I decided to do a "quilt as you go" to practice various quilting patterns. I was able to use the fabric left over from the blocks as backing. I call this Log Cabin Sampler because each block is a log cabin variation and each block uses a different quilting design.

Pamela Yonge
Doug & Nadine’s Quilt

This quilt was made for my nephew and his wife as a wedding gift. Since I wanted to do the quilting myself, I had to adapt a suitable pattern to the quilt-as-you-go method. Consequently, finding, adapting and piecing this quilt pattern was time consuming and a huge challenge! When I asked them what colours they liked, they replied “surprise us.” No help with that one! So, I chose red & black because those were the colours of their wedding invitation. The red & black fabric selection was very easy but the lattice strips were tough (many trips to the fabric store) and working in a monochromatic scheme was so restrictive for me because I love to use lots of colour! Made of 100% cotton fabrics, cotton batting, Aurefil cotton thread, Sulky 12 wt for the quilting, machine pieced and machine quilted.

Joyce Kaip
Oriental Cranes

This is the first time Joyce has ever placed a quilt in a quilt show! It took her 3 years to make. This is a paper pieced pattern and each 4" square has 17 pieces. Joyce made this quilt as a graduation gift for her granddaughter, Megan. What an amazing quilt and such a special gift to give! The pattern is "The Peace Quilt" designed by Margaret Rolfe. Joyce named her quilt "Oriental Cranes". She made it larger and changed the border. Rhonda from Quilted Cats Hideaway quilted it.
Well Done Joyce!!!!

My Spring Garden

The applique block patterns in this quilt came from "My Whimsical Quilt Garden" from Piece O'Cake Designs. The pieced blocks and the layout were from a quilt I saw on the internet. I really enjoyed making this quilt and have worked on it over the last two years. It is machine appliqued and quilted by me.

The Bling's My Thing

The quilt was started in October 2010 when my Dad spent about 20 hours helping me to organize the papers needed for paper piecing. This was the last activity we were able to do together, before dementia stole him from me. I needed help with the quilting because I was planning to embellish the finished quilt with Swarovski crystals. Linda Weinstein of Creative Sisters Quilt Studio in Kitchener was able to create a beautiful quilt scape for me. In total, about 35,000 crystals were individually glued to the surface, following the quilting designs. The quilt took about 700 hours to complete and was finished just hours before hanging in the Waterloo County Quilters' Guild 2013 show.

Love Celtic Knots

I took a workshop in 2000 and knew I love Celtic Knots. A friend sent me a book and I knew one day I would make a quilt. I worked on this project sitting with my husband who was recuperating from an illness. I used silk batting and it was a joy to work with.

Mary Murray
Sea and Sand

Mary Murray is very active in sewing charity quilts for the local hospital, "kids in trauma" and SQuilts of Valour.Between all of the sewing of donated quilts, Mary finds time to enjoy an occasional retreat. It was at the annual Gimli Retreat this past winter where Mary started her Sea and Sand quilt. She cut; strata sewed, cut again and then sewed all day and through most of the nights to finish her winning Sea and Sand bargello quilt. During one of these late nights Mary’s sewing machine packed it in, as if to say, “enough is enough”. The former talented Heather Lair came to the rescue and kindly offered Mary her machine, so that Mary was able to finish the quilt for the Saturday show and tell.

A Galaxy of Colour and Light

Inspired by the colourful quilts of Jacqueline de Jonge, this piece stretched my knowledge of colour theory and honed my paper piecing skills. Collecting the fabrics, auditing the colours and sorting the pieces into categories was almost as challenging as the stitching process. Galaxy was constructed using de Jonge's pattern Circle of Life and her techniques, which I acquired at a Be Colorful workshop held in Cochrane spring 2010. Finally completed at Calgary 2013 this quilt features the bold and fabulous custom quilting stitches of Dorothy Cornforth.

Escher Steps

Maurits Comelis Escher (1898-1972) was a Dutch graphic artist. He was known as M.C. Escher who created optical illusions in his artwork and one of them is an illusion of steps which appear to go every direction. In this quilt design, based on the traditional log cabin pattern, you can see steps either ascending or descending. As you look at the steps they seem to change, just as “Escher Steps” do.
