Mary Anne Smith
Tinbox Challenge

Mary Anne Smith of Millarville, AB, began quilting in 1975 when she got involved with making charity quilts for the Canadian Red Cross and the Alberta Handicraft Guild. When the Chinook Country Quilts showed the results of a Tinbox Challenge, in June 2006, Mary Anne's Tinbox Challenge quilt, 62"square, was the award for viewer's choice.



Jean Hillis
Bali-Go-Round

The Oxford Quilters Guild held their show, Pieces of Magic Quilt Show from September 21-23, 2006. They awarded the CQA/ACC Rosette for Viewer's Choice to Jean Hillis of Ingersoll, ON, for her 85" x 104" quilt, Bali-Go-Round. The quilt is hand pieced and appliquéd and hand quilted with batik fabrics, mostly purchased in Bali. The Traditional Winding Ways pattern is bordered with an original appliqué design.


Pat DeSchover
Family Heirloom

Pat DeSchover of Lloydminster, SK, has been spending many hours hand quilting with her mother. She believes that it has surprised her mother that she was able to stick with this project until completion. Her quilt, Family Heirloom, 80"x 90", took three months to hand quilt. But it was worth it, Pat; it was appreciated by the viewer's of 2006 Quilt Show sponsored by the Lloydminster Log Cabin Quilters Guild, and consequently won the CQA/ACC rosette. The quilt pattern was published in the Oct/Nov 98 issue of Quiltmaker Magazine. Pat is a charter member of the Guild which was formed in 1989.



Heather MacDonald-Sorochan
Priaire Light

Heather MacDonald-Sorochan of Coalhurst, AB, says, “I love the light of the summer evening when the prairie colours are so vibrant and alive. The wildflowers are their own rainbow.” And with those thoughts, she created Priaire Light, a 60"x 76", which won viewer's choice at the Festival of Quilts VII—Under a Prairie Sky, sponsored by the Lethbridge Centennial Quilters Guild, and exhibited from September 23, 2006 to January 7, 2007. The quilt is an original design and is machine pieced, hand appliquéd and hand quilted. Several of the fabrics are hand-dyed by Carol Schuld.


Elaine Macaulay
Fancy Fans

The Mahone Bay Quilters' Guild held their show September 29-October 1, 2006. Elaine Macaulay, who has been quilting for about 35 years and lives in Mahone Bay, NS, won the viewer's choice with her quilt, Fancy Fans (90"x 104"). She enjoys appliqué, pastels and hand quilting, all evident in this quilt. Her Tuesday Bee, The Bay Buddies, helped with the hand quilting. Jeri Biron
Broken Star Variaion

Jeri Biron's quilt block, Broken Star Variaion (16"square) won viewer's choice for a machine-pieced block in the Mary Mayne Award for Workmanship competition (December 2006), sponsored by the Rivervalley Quilters. Jeri resides in Kamloops and has been quilting for over fifteen years. She belongs to several quilting groups and enthusiastically supports them all.


Diana Barlow
Cheryl's Garde

After years of cross-stitch, embroidery, needlepoint, and crocheting, Diana Barlow was ready for something new! Quilting was it. She used to laugh at the expression, “Quilting is addictive”, but now, after three years of quilting she completely agrees. When, on November 24-26, 2006, the York Heritage Quilters' Guild held A Celebration of Quilts IX, her quilt, Cheryl's Garden (62"square) won the viewer's choice award. Diana Barlow, of Toronto, used Mary Sorensen's Pattern # 24 as a jumping off point. Then she added the bird motifs and broderie perse butterflies. The entire quilt is echo quilted by Linda Hoiko.



Donna Hamilton
Autumn Splendour

Donna Hamilton, President of Kingston Heirloom QG with “Autumn Splendour” Best of Show 2008 This hand quilted, hand appliquéd quilt was made by members of the Guild. It featured the broken star pattern, feather motif, crosshatching and an appliquéd floral garland on the border. Inspiration… pattern by Caroline Abbott of Maine published in American Quilters' society 2004

Quilts in the Valley

Abbotsford QG. 2008: Lois Brown, quilt maker & Lisa Theissen, longarm quilter with Best of Show 'Quilts in the Valley'
The Quilter's Guild of Renfrew and Area held its biennial quilt show on May 31 and June 1, 2008. The CQA/ACC rosette for Viewer's Choice was won by Evelyn Simpson of Mink Lake for her cross-stitched and hand quilted Purple Iris quilt. She made the queen size quilt for her daughter Julie, whose favourite flower is the iris. Evelyn says “ I made my first quilt for Julie when she was a baby, 43 years ago, and since then, I've made about 150 more, all but one hand quilted.”



Debby Kemball
Summer Rhapsody

Beaconsfield QG Debby Kemball won Viewers' Choice for 'Summer Rhapsody'.

She also won for September Garden at the NJS this year. These are 2 of a series of four. It is detailed hand appliqué, hand quilted with echo quilting throughout. The saw tooth border is machine pieced.



Marjorie Colman-Sadd
Tying the Knot

Cabot QG, Marjorie Colman-Sadd, won Viewer's Choice Award for "Tying the Knot".

It is a double-sided quilt. Our show "Airing Our Quilts” was held during Quilt Canada 2008.

Lynn Miskell
Falling...In Love

Lynn Miskell of Castlegar Quilters Guild (BC) won Best of Show. Her quilt is 'Falling...In Love' and was made for her Son and Daughter-in-law.

Inspiration: a Storm at Sea pattern featured in a Canadian Quilter magazine from 2006. The quilt was quilted by Flamingo Quiltworx of Castlegar.

Autumn Breeze/Brise D'autumn

Pauline Bessette won best of show for 'Autumn Breeze/Brise D'autumn'. Original design.

Pauline has been quilting for 6 years, but watched her mother quilt for 20.

Marge Samborski belongs to Minnedosa Valley Piecemakers. Her quilt 'Watercolour Bargello' won viewer's choice.

Betty Rockwell won viewer's choice for 'Conway Album' at the Cumberland Quilt Guild Show.

Pattern: Irma Gail Hatcher. Betty has 8 childen & 16 grandchildren and they also have at least one of her quilts.



Linda Hoiko
The Midnight Fantasy Garden

Linda Hoiko's The Midnight Fantasy Garden won Viewers' Choice First Place at Rouge Valley Quilters Guild Quilt Show and at York Heritage Quilters Guild Quilt Show, Pattern: 'Simple Gifts' by Mary Sorensen.

Hand appliquéd with touches of gold in the fabrics to give shimmer.



Susan McEachern
Cottage Garden

Susan McEachern's 'Cottage Garden' was awarded: Best of Show, Best Hand Applique and first place in Traditional Large Category in the Kennebecasis Valley Quilting Guild show.


Rhonda Harvey
Nuts and Bolts

Rhonda Harvey won viewer's choice for her quilt 'Nuts and Bolts' at the Whistler Valley Quilt Guild (BC).

Pattern by Susan Allen of 'The Quilt Asylum'. Rhonda was drawn to the bold splashy fabrics within simple blocks.
